Steve Artley

Steven George Artley is a retired political cartoonist and satirist, whose work was syndicated and distributed throughout the U.S. and Canada. His cartoons have been published regularly in The New York Times, Washington Post, USAToday, Newsweek, and routinely included in the weekly lineup on online anthologies of TIME Magazine's "Best Cartoons of the Week," Politico's "Cartoon Carousel," and NPR's "Double Takes." Internationally, his cartoons have appeared in magazines and periodicals in Japan and Europe. His cartoons continue to be used in school textbooks and interactive educational materials through Pearson Education and Savvas Learning. He also wrote and performed satirical spots for a weekly political commentary podcast (1) based in Virginia.

Artley is a member and served on the Board of the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists (AAEC). He is a member of the National Cartoonists Society (NCS), the National Press Club in Washington DC, an honorary member of the Association of Canadian Cartoonists; has juried cartoon/book contests for NCS, and was on the panel of judges for the prestigious Herblock Prize in 2023.

Artley has and continues to offer speaking engagements on political cartooning, Satire, and Freedom of Speech topics to schools and colleges, civic groups, clubs, and professional organizations. Among groups hosting his presentations are the Society of Professional Journalists in Washington DC, Virginia Museum of History and Culture in Richmond VA, and Walt Disney's Hometown ToonFest in Marceline, Missouri, where he also served as Grand Marshal in 2014 along with Hilary B. Price, Bill Hinds. Eddie Pittman, and Guy Gilchrist. Artley was also invited to attend and exhibit his work at The Salon de la Caricature et du dessin de Presse in Saint-Just-le-Martel, France.

Back to the Nurture

[SAINT PAUL MN] Following a 45-year art career, Steve Artley has exchanged his hectic life in the center of political madness in Washington DC for the more serene setting of the upper Midwest. He packed up his pens and crayons to return to the point of origin: Minnesota, opting for the calmer, gentler Twin City of Saint Paul. 

    Now retired, he occupies a spacious loft studio with intent to explore other media and activities as creative outlets. 

    "I want to concentrate on other interests," Artley remarked, "painting, writing, music; even theater and broadcasting." His interest are diverse, including the sciences, historical research, travel, and nature. He says that he can no longer handle the rigors of the more physically taxing activities like he did in his youth —such as mountain climbing, white water canoeing, and acrobatic horseback riding, but is eager to try new things. "Sky diving," he said, "seems like a natural for an old fella like me," adding, "it's simply falling."

A Chance Meeting Worth Noting

Returning from the Midwest recently, I found that a cabin mate was none other than former House Speaker Newt Gringrich. 

While waiting for our luggage, I had struck up a conversation with one of the other passengers, an attractive, articulate, well-dressed woman. Admittedly, she looked familiar, but I couldn't quite place her. Turns out she was the U.S. Ambassador to the Vatican, Callista Gingrich. So, I had to get a selfie with Mr. Newt — telling him that I had lampooned him as much as some presidents.

Join Artley as he gives you a glimpse behind the artist’s pen, presents a primer on creative inspiration, artistic development and technical production of an editorial cartoon. See how historical events were lampooned over the years through this most uniquely specialized lens of political commentary. You’ll see the components that make an editorial cartoon successful along with the pitfalls. Also covered are how the changes in news media has affected editorial cartooning and what the future holds for this distinctive journalistic medium.

Artley’s editorial work has appeared in nearly every major newspaper and magazine throughout the United States and Canada including The Washington Post, the New York Times, TIME Magazine, and Newsweek — with his syndicated distribution worldwide. Twice earning the “Best Editorial Cartoonist of the Year” award from the Minnesota Newspaper Association, Artley received First Place six times in the annual Virginia Press Association News Contests. He is a member of both the National Cartoonists Society and the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists, where he served on the Board in 2016.

A highlight for the evening will be a drawing for an original cartoon, donated by the artist.

If you’re in the area and have nothing better to do, like a root canal or prep for a colonoscopy, then come on down and spend the evening with me babbling about the often misunderstood and rapidly diminishing world of EDITORIAL CARTOONING. As a 35 year veteran of second stringers in the field — I offer some insights into the trade, the perils, struggles, challenges to free speech and offer a glimpse behind the curtain in the development process — among other things. And, I will share samples of my outrageously irreverent, often left-leaning (occasionally right-facing) political renderings. We’ll end with a Q & A session, so bring your slings and arrows (metaphorically); no tomatoes though, please… I’m allergic.

AND, there will be a cartoon as a door prize. Suitable for framing, this little gem also makes a good coaster, placemat, doormat, bathroom mat (absorbent Strathmore Bistrol vellum) and makes the perfect target for the NRA.
